Hot Topics Breakfast Seminar - Kelowna
This session will include quick coverage of 20 snap topics, summarily addressing current issues, recent case law and how to easily avoid and correct common errors.

Co-presented by Matt Fischer and Maris Holmes.

  1. Dealing with hostile owners who produce excessive correspondence and/or abuse s. 34.1 hearings, lawsuits and the Civil Resolution Tribunal
  2. Recent Legislative amendments:
    1. Allowing more flexibility for user fees, and
    2. Allowing much higher fines for breach of vacation rental prohibition bylaws.
  3. CRT Update and the proposed changes to the appeal process
  4. Marijuana Update – cultivation prohibitions and overlapping federal/provincial/municipal/strata regulation
  5. Transparency issues – disclosing litigation to owners and ensuring transparency in meeting minutes
  6. Vagueness in Bylaws – risks and solutions
  7. Assigning and managing Parking and Lockers
  8. Removal of a council president or council member

     Matt Fischer has appeared in all levels of Court in British Columbia, and has conducted a variety of Court proceedings on behalf of his clients, including complex multi-party strata litigation and litigation dealing with property use, repairs, bylaw enforcement, collections, governance, and actions for damages.
           Maris spent her early years in Vancouver but recently
    moved to Kelowna to develop her litigation practice.
    Maris completed her articles and commenced practice with a well-regarded litigation firm in Vancouver prior to joining Doak Shirreff. Maris was called to the bar in 2016.
